"From
a drop of water, a logician could infer the possibility
of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard
of one or the other. So all life is a great chain, the
nature of which is known whenever we are shown a single
link of it . . . . By a man's fingernails, by his coat-sleeve,
by his boot, by his trouser-knees, by the callosities
of his forefinger and thumb, by his expression, by his
shirt-cuffs - by each of these things a man's calling
is plainly revealed. That all united should fail to
enlighten the competent enquirer in any case is almost
inconceivable" -- Mr. Sherlock Holmes (STUD).

And
therein we begin the study of those objects, environs,
and personal effects of the great detective that
we might know him and his times a little better.
Additions and comments from other Solitary Cyclists
(who meet with themselves irregularly) are always
welcome.
This
compendium of personal effects and environs of
those two quite famous individuals of 221B Baker
Street has been compiled directly from the 56
short stories, 4 novels, and 2 official pastiches,
all of which appear under the name Arthur Conan
Doyle. Notes and comments have been added where
available. Certainly there is other scholarship
available that the author has been unable to find
or reproduce. In any case, I hope you enjoy it
as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

The
Ocular Helmsman is fully updated through the end
of the Memoirs, and although it contains a great
deal of information from the Return and the Casebook,
updates from from the Return and Casebook will
continue over the next few months.
