"In glancing over my notes of the seventy odd cases in which I have during the last eight years studied the methods of my friend Sherlock Holmes, I find many tragic, some comic, a large number merely strange, but none commonplace; for, working as he did rather for the love of his art than for the acquirement of wealth, he refused to associate himself with any investigation which did not tend towards the unusual and even the fantastic." -- Watson in SPEC

In addition, there are two stories published under the name Arthur Conan Doyle that have not been assigned 4-letter abbreviations (don't ask me why for I certainly cannot say other than the fact that they are much, much shorter than the other stories) published at approximately the same time as the other short stories and novels. However, they were not published by the Strand or in extended printing. One was a fundraiser for Edinburgh University and the other was composed for Queen Mary. They are not properly considered part of the Canon which, to me, is utterly flummoxing. They are:

How Watson Learned the Trick

&

The Field Bazaar

The text of both of these stories is available online at The Diogenes Club.
